April 27, 1:27pm.
Meeting with my first ever client was extremely nerve wrecking, but when it's a couple you have known for years, it helps ease those nerves. Back in February, I met with a friends sister and brother-in-law. I knew that they were going to "hire" me, but I was still nervous as I was using this as practice in how to speak with clients. Fast forward to April, and there I was, standing with them at the hospital, ready to support them in bringing their second baby boy into the world. I got a text and was told they were at the hospital, getting settled in. They gave me the option of joining them at that point, and I took it! I knew her labor would be quick, as it is their second baby and she didn't have to wait for her induction date (yay!). I joined them at the hospital and got straight to work. Once the nurse had checked her out and said she was okay to get up, we started walking. I could barely tell when she was having contractions. This was my first lesson of the labor. She hides her pain VERY well. I began to slowly catch a few cues that told me she was having a contraction (she would keep talking with us, but her hands would grip something nearby as tight as they could). After a little walking, rocking in a chair and a little throw up, we got checked again and headed into the tub. About a half hour later she felt the urge to push, and thats when the doctor walked in. This was my second lesson. Sometimes, the doctor isn't at the hospital and may have to rush in and get her scrubs on (in her heels). We got her onto the bed, where she wanted to push, still a little wet from the tub and she started pushing away. These pushes were amazing, I mean just beautiful. The grace and strength she showed was outstanding. Less than 20 minutes later, we had a healthy and perfect baby boy laying on her chest. This was my third biggest lesson of the day. Pushing doesn't always take long! It was 6 contractions worth of pushes and they were perfect pushes, with a baby ready to be born into the world. I'd like to thank my client for teaching me how to support in the way she and her husband wanted. Thank you for showing me how a woman can accept the labor and contractions and take it within, working with it, instead of against it. Thank you for letting me be apart of you graceful moment when you brought your baby boy into this world, surrounded by a large, loving family.
